Netflix has officially kicked off the marketing cycle for Wednesday Season 2, and with it, a wave of new theories is flooding the fandom. But one particular character — Evie Templeton — is stirring up suspicion. And based on everything we’ve seen so far, she may not be just another background student at Nevermore Academy. She might be something much more dangerous.

Could Evie be the new Laurel Gates? Or even the masked villain teased in the trailer?

Let’s break it down.

A Familiar Silence

Evie Templeton’s casting was confirmed early in production, and yet… we know almost nothing about her. No lines in the trailer. No dedicated poster. No character bio. Just a newly released still from Netflix, showing her in uniform among a group of seemingly new students — all looking intrigued by Wednesday Addams.

Sound familiar?

It should. In Season 1, Laurel Gates used a similar strategy. Disguised as the warm and friendly teacher Marilyn Thornhill, she flew under the radar until the final episodes, when she was revealed to be the mastermind behind it all.

That same formula might be repeating — this time through a student instead of a teacher.

Visual Clues and Horror Tropes

The Season 2 trailer offers only a glimpse of a masked figure, but even in that blink-and-you-miss-it moment, the silhouette stands out: short, slim, agile — a far cry from the towering slashers of '80s horror. It’s a profile that matches Evie, or even another student seen beside her in the new image: a notably petite girl positioned on the far right.

But all eyes are on Evie. While the others in the scene seem excited or curious about Wednesday, Evie’s expression feels different — more observant than admiring. As if she’s not just meeting Wednesday… but studying her.

This isn't a new narrative trick. Horror history is full of stories where innocence is a mask. From Alice, Sweet Alice (1976) to the Scream franchise — where Jenna Ortega herself stars in parts 5 and 6 — the idea of a young, unsuspecting killer has been a staple. Wednesday has already shown it’s not afraid to borrow from classic horror tropes, and this could be another deliberate nod.

The Infiltration Theory

In Season 1, Laurel Gates infiltrated Nevermore to revive Joseph Crackstone’s legacy. So what if Evie Templeton is the next phase of that plan?

This time, instead of hiding behind authority, the villain slips in as just another student — perfectly positioned to observe, blend in, and act without suspicion.

There’s even visual continuity to support the theory: Evie appears with a hair tone similar to Laurel’s when she posed as Thornhill. Coincidence? Possibly. But given Wednesday’s love for layered storytelling, it might also be a clue hiding in plain sight.

And what if Laurel isn’t actually gone? One theory circulating online suggests she might return in the final episode — setting up Evie’s actions in Season 2 as groundwork for a Season 3 reveal.

So… Is Evie the Villain?

Right now, there are no confirmed details about who Evie Templeton really is. But the silence around her, the framing of the new still, and the presence of a masked figure in the trailer all suggest that she could be more important than Netflix wants us to realize — at least for now.

If Wednesday is repeating its own formula, then the masked villain might not be hiding in the shadows… but walking the halls of Nevermore in plain sight. Again.
